Our Staff

Anna McKean

Anna started working at the clinic in 1996 as a kennel staff member. She currently is the Clinic Team Leader. You will find her interacting with clients behind the front desk but she also helps manage the the office. She has developed many skills over an 18 year period and is able to help the doctors, train new staff, and help clients with most of their questions. 

Anna has a large family in the Lansing area. When she is not  helping to manage the clinic she is busy managing her family. Her daughter, husband, and numerous cats and dogs keep her focused. Needless to say...life is busy at work and at home. 

Philip M. Smyka

Philip is currently in his final year of veterinary school at Michigan State University.  His father, Philip J. Smyka founded the clinic in 1985.  Before attending veterinary school, Philip obtained a bachelor's degree in Accountancy and spent several years managing the practice after his father's passing.  He currently manages the practice with his wife, Dr. Rebecca Smyka.

Philip grew up in Lansing, graduated from East Lansing High School, and spent his free time watching Michigan State athletics, a tradition he continues today….especially when they are playing his wife's alma mater, Purdue. When he isn't at the clinic or in school he enjoys spending time with his wife and children, four legged pets, his family, and friends. 

Samantha Sikkenga, LVT

Sam is a Licensed Veterinary Technician.  She has worked as a technician since graduating from Baker College in her hometown, Muskegon, in 2011.  Sam moved to Lansing and started working at the clinic in 2013.  In her free time, she enjoys time with her cats, Peaches and Cricket, her Golden Retriever, Remy, and a saltwater reef aquarium.  She also has a love for art, and prior to becoming a veterinary technician, studied art at Northern Michigan University.  She combines both her love of animals and her love of art to create pet portraits.  Several of Sam's portraits can be found on the walls of the clinic. 

Alice Snook, LVT

Alice is a 1998 graduate of MSU with a bachelor's degree in Animal Science and a license in veterinary technology.  I have been working in veterinary medicine for the past 16 years.  My husband and I have two children, and we love to take the family camping and hiking.  My family is rounded out by a dog I have rescued, and two cats.

Penni Elsesser

Penni started working at the clinic in 2010.  She is also certified in dog training and evaluation of shelter dogs by the Animal Behavior Colllege. She is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT)and a Canine Good Citizen evaluator through the American Kennel Club. She is also part of a Therapy Dog Team. At home she has two Rottweilers (Kylli and Roscoe) and two cats (Betty Lou and Bobby Jo).  Her hobbies include: fishing,camping, snowmobiling, boating, traveling, and animals of course!

Margot Saxena 

Margot graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology.  She currently attends MSU's Veterinary Technology program and plans to apply to the Veterinary program in 2016.  Margot has been working in the veterinary field for over seven years.  She has two Golden Retrievers, Ellie Mae and Logan, and two cats, Charlie and Mufasa.  When she's not at work, Margot enjoys sports, traveling, anime and animals.  She is very excited to be a part of the LLRAC team and to learn all that she can! 

Leah Baker

Leah is an undergraduate at Michigan State University, studying for a B.S. in Zoology.  She has one cat, Roman, and a dog, Little Bear.  Leah has been working in a veterinary setting for four years and is excited to be part of the Lake Lansing Road team!

Janna Foster

Janna is currently attending Michigan State University's Veterinary Technology program. She is so grateful to be a part of Lake Lansing Road Animal Clinic's team as the intern that lives upstairs! She has a passion for not only small animals but large animals and wildlife as well. She looks forward to furthering her experience here and to what the future holds in her animal career!

Katie Yun

Katie started working in the resort in 2002. We quickly noticed her love for animals, hard work, dedication, and attention to detail. Not long after did she become the resort manager.She currently is in charge of hiring, training, and managing all resort staff members.
